Help prepare the Marina neighborhood for an emergency!

The goals of the Disaster Preparedness Committee are to:

• Organize a survival disaster preparedness plan for the Marina neighborhood

-- The neighborhood taking care of the neighborhood

-- Make the most of neighborhood resources and address specific vulnerabilities

• Encourage residents to become NERT trained and organize SAFE neighborhood watch groups,
   based on blocks

• Keep a current map noting all NERTs and SAFE captains

• Establish a network of Block Captains representing each block in the Marina Community Association boundary

• Establish a communication plan within our neighborhood via area quadrants

(walky-talkies for each block and HAMs)

• Establish emergency supply “stashes” in local safe locations

• Coordinate with San Francisco City disaster agencies & plan a communication strategy

There is a 62% probability than an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.7 or greater will strike in the vicinity of S.F., in the next 25 years. WE cannot wait for assistance from overwhelmed police, firefighters, and PGE – SFPUC in the event of a serious earthquake. When disaster strikes, we’re all going to be on our own for a minimum of 72 hours. We urge you to organize your block [identify all households, hold yearly get-togethers to meet your neighbors, identify two captains to organize via the SAFE model, established by the SFPD] and get NERT training [San Francisco Fire Department trains civilians in disaster preparedness and safety in a twenty hour – six session – free course taught by firefighters].

When individuals and neighbors are prepared to mutually assist each other immediately after a disaster, lives can be saved, property can be spared, and emergency services can focus on responding to the most devastated areas.

The Marina Community Association Disaster Preparedness Committee is open for additional volunteer members.

Organize your block:

Call SAFE at 553-1982 – Pam Matsuda (pam@sfsafe.org), program director or Cindy Wandel (Cindy@sfsafe.org), SAFE Director– to get help with organizing the first block meeting. Or, do it yourself (download sample Letter and data sheet) and contact SAFE as well as (important!) contact the marina Community Association (for inclusion on our master map) – Diane Brockob: livearch@aol.com - 447-7992. A block is normally all residences on both sides of every street, from one intersection to the next. Some streets cannot conform to this – whatever is logical to the organizers is OK.
